The New York Times today ran the fifth article in a series on Newark NJ, and its mayor’s first year in office. The current mayor, Cory A. Booker has attempted, since he was inaugurated in July, 2006, to curb the tide of crime-related violence and murder in the city. Tonight’s Islam class was all about learning to walk in the shoes of the Other, but peppered with disparaging remarks about western Christianity’s ritual practices. In his fervor to teach us to be sensitive to Islamic ritual practices, the speaker trashed the ritual religious traditions of his audience. It reminds me of a saying from the anti-war, anti-capital punishment era, “How do you teach people not to kill people by killing them?” Read the rest of this entry »

There’s an account, in the Old Testament, of Abraham bargaining with God, attempting to get Him to change His mind about dealing with the violence in the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah.
GOD continued, “The cries of the victims in Sodom and Gomorrah are deafening; the sin of those cities is immense. I’m going down to see for myself, see if what they’re doing is as bad as it sounds. Then I’ll know.” The men set out for Sodom, but Abraham stood in GOD’s path, blocking his way. Abraham confronted him, “Are you serious?
