Talking to Our Father

Prayer, in it’s purest form, is just a continual  conversation with our God. But the quality of conversations depends on the quality of the relationship. We need a real relationship with our God to really talk with Him. However, sometimes a relationship begins with one real conversation, so if you want to build a real relationship with your God, just start talking–really talking–to Him!.

How do we develop real conversations? Communication theorists claim there are five levels to human communications: the most superficial levels are cliches, facts, & opinions. Once we learn to open up and really share, we share feelings, and needs. Most of us use the first three levels freely–“how are you?” “fine.” “nice day, isn’t it?” etc. We call them social conventions.

Prayer can be a social convention too. We routinely mumble scripture verses, pious platitudes, or ritual prayers, like The Lord’s Prayer, from memory, without serious forethought or real consideration.

Some believers even go on ‘babbling’ forever, as if God were deaf or sleeping. It’s a wonder He ever gets a word in edgewise! When we are tempted to ‘babble’, we need to stop and listen.

Our Father is neither deaf nor sleeping. He knows what we mean to say before we say it. He reads our hearts. So if you really want a conversation with Him, keep your own words simple and short! Let Him do most of the talking. His Words are Spirit and Life! (KISS) ; )

When you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. (Matthew 6:6-7)

But I have stilled and quieted my soul;
like a weaned child with its mother,
like a weaned child is my soul within me.(Psalm 131:2)

OK, so once we’ve chosen a real relationship with our Father, how do we talk with Him?  That’s a simple answer! How do you talk to someone you care for, or love? How do you talk to someone you trust? That’s how you talk to God!

Tell Him how much you love Him, how awesome He is, how thankful you are for His presence in your life, and how much you appreciate His healing, rescuing, providing care for all of us. Talk with Him about your feelings, your needs, and things that matter to you and to Him. He wants to be involved in every moment of your life, so let Him in!

Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.  (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18)
