I pray for you all the time–pray that our God will make you fit for what he’s called you to be, pray that he’ll fill your good ideas and acts of faith with his own energy so that it all amounts to something. (2 Thessalonians 1:11-Message Bible)
There’s an account, in the Old Testament, of Abraham bargaining with God, attempting to get Him to change His mind about dealing with the violence in the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah.
GOD continued, “The cries of the victims in Sodom and Gomorrah are deafening; the sin of those cities is immense. I’m going down to see for myself, see if what they’re doing is as bad as it sounds. Then I’ll know.” The men set out for Sodom, but Abraham stood in GOD’s path, blocking his way. Abraham confronted him, “Are you serious? Are you planning on getting rid of the good people right along with the bad?” (Genesis 18:20-23)
Abraham boldly negotiated with God until He agreed not to bring judgment down on Sodom, providing God could find at least 10 righteous men left in the city, and he wouldn’t quit until God agreed.
“Don’t get angry, Master–this is the last time. What if you only come up with ten?”
God promised, “For the sake of only ten, I won’t destroy the city.” (Genesis 18:32)
Abraham had chutzpah! He said to God (more or less) “Whatta you nutz?” You’re gonna wipe out a whole city for a few bad apples? Just stop and think about this awhile. Let’s check out the other options before you turn your fire loose!” That’s a friend speaking… Friends take liberties… Abraham was God’s friend.
This blog is about being a friend–to God and to the world–interceeding for a world that needs help getting out of bondage to violence, hatred, and all the other names of darkness.
The residents of Sodom and Gomorrah made God’s radar for a specific kind of violence, but in today’s world, violence, sin, and darkness seem to have reached into every relationship, family, home, country, and nation.
My world is in trouble, and I need to speak for it to the God of Abraham, Jacob, and Jesus – to my God – the God who can bring redemption, healing, restoration, freedom, and victory over the darkness that threatens us. Alone I am useless, but as a voice for my world to my Father who can do everything, I am a majority.
If your heart is open to becoming a friend to God our Father, and an advocate for a world torn by violence and strife, I invite you to join your voice to mine, as we pray to transform our world.
“Pray for each other so that you can live together whole and healed. The prayer of a person living right with God is something powerful to be reckoned with.” (James 5:16)
